New Thoughts for a New Year

With a holiday season behind us, we may reflect on our activities—what we enjoyed and saw what we had hoped for.  Perhaps we started new traditions or saw unmet expectations. Some sigh that they survived disappointments or serious events. and welcome turning the calendar page.

As we begin 2026, we continue in motion, writing commitments on our calendar, making plans and setting goals. Some choose to make resolutions. Others use the DaySpring quiz and choose a word for the year to focus on or make a Bible verse a mission statement. There’s a lot of motion in these first few days—doing, planning, changing, and making decisions.

One verb that rarely appears for the new year come.

As we embark on another year, and continue moving, perhaps we can first come.  Not coming in a rush to make appointments or complete tasks, but as Jesus said,

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29 NIV

Resolutions sometimes fall flat before we flip the calendar to February, and plans with the best of intentions may not materialize, but Jesus invites us to come and let Him lead and teach us. He adds that we will find a sure promise; He… Share on X

So as we look at the next twelve months let’s start by coming.

  • Hebrews 12:2 tells us to “fix our eyes on Jesus.”
  • Paul wrote to the Colossians to set our minds on things above. (Colossians 3:2)
  • In Philippians 4:8 Paul leads us to thought patterns that will enrich our lives.

Daily life includes necessary tasks and responsibilities.  We may have urgent interruptions that require immediate responses, but each day we can set our priority to come and learn

As we quiet our minds to listen, we’ll find rest. In that promised rest, we’ll find His love, wisdom, and direction for the days ahead.

Share your thoughts about choosing to come. How have you seen the promise?

  1. Barbara Latta says:

Coming to Jesus with our burdens is a good way to start a new year. We can release, rest, and let Him refresh us. I think that’s the best resolution we can all make.

  2. Candyce Carden says:

I like the word “come.” It is an invitation we do not want to overlook.

  3. Katherine M Pasour says:

When I thinkj of “come” I’m reminded of His invitation–“Come to me all of you who are weary and I will give you rest.” His invitation is always open and He is trustworthy in His calling. Christ (Immanuel) is with us. Thank you, Marilyn.

  4. Yvonne Morgan says:

That is such a great word for the new year. It really allows us to remember the first step in every new move we make. My word(s) is No Fears. Thanks for sharing Marilyn.
