Last week, one of my electronic games didn’t work. Despite recharging the batteries, one click to begin a game proved they did not come to life. Two reasons surfaced: the batteries were dead, and they were not rechargeable. No matter how long I left them in the charger, they would remain useless. That I learned from my grandson.
He didn’t realize he gave me a subject for today’s post. No matter how hard we try to fix or solve, sometimes we look in the wrong place. The remote needed new batteries. I won’t come to life if I look in the wrong place to be recharged; if I’m unwilling to be recharged in the right way. If what I really need is new life batteries.
i know (from personal experience) a hot fudge sundae with whipped cream, or a fancy coffee beverage momentarily puts a spring in my step (and adds to my hips). It refreshes for the moment. It may distract me from thinking about a heavy schedule, a decision, or an interpersonal conflict, but once the last calorie is consumed, it’s back to reality.
And often our reality is that the battery can’t be recharged by a dessert or latest coffee. I need something new. What then? Where do I go?
Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles. (Psalm 119:50 NLT)
God promises His strength. He hears, sees, and knows our need.
We click and the remote doesn’t work because batteries run out of life; we do too. That’s the perfect time to find a lasting fix, not for a situation, but for me to go to the Source and “take hold of the life that is truly life”. (I Timothy 6:19 NIV) Looking to Him will avoid the frustration of being overwhelmed by clicking when nothing temporary works.
What are your thoughts about real recharging?

What comfort we can find in Him! Great message.
Thank you. I have to remind myself, Melissa and writing it helps.
That grandson of yours sure seems to be a “tech wizard” Ms. Marilyn. Such a blessing; and great counsel my friend.
Enjoyed your post, Marilyn–I have several buttons that don’t work anymore, but unfortunately, they aren’t electronic and new batteries won’t help. The reminder, that there are spiritual areas that can and do need recharging was well done, and as far as the other hardware is concerned, I am also one of those blessed folks who have tech savvy grandchildren.
Remembering Christ’s words to abide in Him reminds me that I cannnot thrive if I am separated from the vine. Thanks for sharing those scriptures.
Sometimes I turn to people first to talk out my lack of comfort or peace. When I turn to God first, I find more immediate and lasting comfort, peace, and wisdom. Your analogy about the batteries is perfect and the list of verses are powerful, Marilyn. Thank you for a powerful message.
Romans 15:13 is one of my go to. I have to agree, the hot fudge sundae sure feels good in the moment. 🙂 But God’s word refreshes the soul.
Thanks for the reminder to recharge with the right batteries. Often I feel like calm and tranquility are what I need, but although that might be true, my real rest is always in a Person. It is in the Lord, Coffee is a sweet perk for sure!
Jesus and coffee:) We can sit for hours.
The perfect scriptures I needed for this week. Thank you.
So glad, Jennifer!
My batteries seem to be running out more often these days. The hot fudge sundae sounds good to me! Thank you for this reassuring message that reminds us to whom we must turn for recharging. As good as that hot fudge sundae is, it doesn’t do it for us. Jesus is the answer. Blessings, my friend.
Thanks for the reminder to recharge my batteries the right way with lasting strength instead of sugary sweets that will melt away.
